Biographical Sketch

Dr. Kanzler is an Assistant Professor within the Department of Psychiatry with cross-appointment to Family and Community Medicine at the University of Texas Health Science Center at San Antonio (UTHSCSA). She is a board-certified clinical health psychologist and nationally-recognized expert in integrated primary care behavioral health. She is a clinical and translational investigator dedicated to improving chronic disease outcomes and reducing health disparities. Dr. Kanzler studies nonpharmacologic transdiagnostic approaches relevant to a wide range of chronic health conditions including: chronic pain, substance use disorder, diabetes, etc.  Dr. Kanzler has particular expertise in mindfulness-based approaches and “third-wave” behavioral treatments, including Acceptance and Commitment Therapy, which have particular relevance to the direction the NRLC is taking in work on reducing drunk driving recidivism.

Prior to her work in academic medicine, Dr. Kanzler served as an active duty US Air Force psychologist where she held a variety of clinician-educator roles. Her work involved caring for military service members and their families with diverse health problems, as well as high-risk (e.g., suicide risk, addictions) members with complex needs in both US and deployed settings. Her service included a special assignment as Director of the base-wide Alcohol and Drug Abuse Prevention and Treatment program at Incirlik Air Base, Turkey, where she provided treatment for substance use disorders and supervision for licensed Alcohol and Drug Counselors.

  • Mindfulness-based approaches to chronic disease management
  • Dissemination of evidence based behavioral treatments to improve chronic disease outcomes and reduce health disparities
