Voelcker Biomedical Research Academy

Biographical Sketch

Sergio worked in the NRLC to gain experience in science through the UTHSCSA Voelcker Biomedical Research Academy (VBRA).  The vision of the Max and Minnie Tomerlin Voelcker Fund Biomedical Research Academy is to provide an immersive biomedical research educational and college preparatory program for San Antonio high school students. Through a collaborative partnership with the UT Health Science Center San Antonio, the goal of the Academy is to create a pipeline for the next generation of outstanding biomedical scientists for our community and the world.  The VBRA engages San Antonio's bright high school students in an intensive 3-year program that includes both classroom didactics and research rotations in laboratories at UTHSCSA.

Based on Sergio's outstanding academic performance, participation in extracurricular activities, community service, and science training, he was admitted to the 2015 class of the Gates Millennium Scholarship and plans on using this scholarship to attend Brown University in Providence, Rhode Island.
